Scheepers slips in first round in Australia

South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers was knocked out of the Australian Open going down to Austria's Yvonne Meusburger in the first round of the women's singles on Tuesday.


Meusburger beat Scheepers 7-6 (7/3), 6-4, in a match which lasted one hour and 38 minutes.

Kevin Anderson, seeded 32 for the tournament, plays unseeded Dominic Thiem of Austria, ranked 136 in the world, in the second round on Wednesday.

Anderson narrowly beat Czech Republic’s 82nd-ranked Jiri Vesely 2-6, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, in his opening match in Melbourne on Monday.
