Currie Cup result: Western Province overcome Griffons

Western Province claimed a bonus-point win as they ran in seven tries against Griffons en route to a 47-28 victory in the Currie Cup at the DHL Stadium on Saturday night.

Despite trailing early in the first half after Griffons centre Carl-Jan Coetzee dotted down, Province scored two tries courtesy of winger Angelo Davids and fullback Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, before burly centre Marquit September restored the visitors’ lead with a powerful effort.

WP No 8 Keke Morabe had the last say in the first half, scoring to establish a 19-14 lead at the break.

The hosts carried their gusto into the second half, scoring through centre Juan de Jongh before Griffons scrumhalf Jaywinn Juries dotted down and converted to make it a five-point ballgame again.

A second try for Morabe on the 60th-minute was cancelled out by Griffons replacement flyhalf Robbie Peter’s touchdown eight minutes later, but Davids then bagged his second try to hand WP a 12-point lead.

Closing the match in style, WP ran in their seventh try through lock Ruben van Heerden to seal a comfortable victory.
