Springboks: The merry-go-round at No 8 continues
Francois Louw, who's never started a Test in the position, is the latest candidate to fill the troublesome position for the Springboks.

Eighthman is clearly not a specialist position in the current Springbok side.
Coach Allister Coetzee confirmed as much on Thursday after naming the experienced Francois Louw in the No 8 jersey for Saturday’s Test against the All Blacks at Newlands.
The 32-year-old has never played in the position at international level before and it vividly illustrates how thin depth is locally.
Then again, the hardworking Uzair Cassiem – before his season-ending injury – also didn’t specialise in the role when he was selected.
“Francois is a seasoned openside flanker and although it’s his first Test start in the No 8 jersey, he has a good understanding of the role we expect from him,” said Coetzee.
“I believe his vast experience will see him settle in quickly in this role.”
Given that most flanks are expected to be versatile nowadays, Louw’s switch probably isn’t too radical.
What it does suggest though is that Coetzee and co still believe injured regular captain Warren Whiteley is the best man for the job … and for the foreseeable future too.
The Du Preez twins – Jean-Luc and Dan – are both in the squad but there seems to be a reluctance to groom them, especially Dan.
Of more concern is Pieter-Steph du Toit’s inclusion at blindside flank.
The 25-year-old has established himself as an excellent lock yet the Boks continue to believe he can make an impact at No 7.
It’s a massive risk.
Not only is Du Toit too tall for the position – he’s over 2m – he’s struggled to make an impact when selected there.
Against the world champions, that doesn’t seem like a risk worth taking.
