‘It wasn’t meant to end like this,’ says gutted Steven Kitshoff

It was not to be a fairytale ending for Stormers legend Steven Kitshoff, who was left gutted as his team slipped to a heartbreaking 19-14 defeat in the United Rugby Championship (URC) final against Munster on Saturday night.

It was the Stormers captain’s last game for the union, with him moving onto Irish giants Ulster for the next URC season, although he did admit last week that he could return to them one day.

In the match the Stormers battled back from a dreadful first half to take the lead in the second, but were in the end undone by a late try that shattered their hearts.

“When that final whistle blew, it felt like it wasn’t meant to happen like this. I felt that we were totally in control of the second half, that we were on top of Munster and that they were scrambling, trying to keep us out,” explained Kitshoff after the game.

“When that final whistle went, I was just trying to hold the tears back. I’m extremely proud of what the guys have achieved during the season. The result tonight (Saturday) is very disappointing, but the guys can hold their heads up high and enjoy each other’s company.

“There are some true friendships that were built throughout the season and guys that really care about each other, so for me, it’s tough to leave like this, but we can be proud.”

Looking forward

Kitshoff admitted that he would be looking forward to facing his former side in the white of Ulster from next season, but could return to the Stormers dugout in the future if coach John Dobson ever wanted him back.

“I am looking forward to playing the Stormers, I know it’s going to be a tough game. I already made a gentleman’s agreement with Frans (Malherbe), that we must both play with multistuds (boots) and look after each other on the field,” said Kitshoff with a laugh.

“But I am proud of the Stormers and proud to have been associated with such an awesome brand and club for so many years. It’s been an incredible honour. They have been absolutely amazing for me, through dark times and good times.

“Just playing in front of 56000 people tonight was massive and I almost cried 10 minutes before the end of the game, just seeing everyone standing up and acknowledging (me).

“I am truly proud and if Dobbo wants me back one day, whether it’s as an old player or a guy who just sits on the bench and mentors players, I will be honoured to return. I am extremely proud of this union and to have been a part of such an amazing club.”
