Rudy Paige’s stay in the wilderness will continue for the foreseeable future.
Bulls coach John Mitchell on Monday confirmed the Springbok scrumhalf isn’t currently in the frame for Super Rugby selection.
It will once again raise questions over the gulf in difference of opinion between the franchise and the national side over his ability.
To his credit, Mitchell was frank about the issue.
“I just thought it’s time to move forward with the young No 9s,” said the former All Blacks mentor.
“I like a very fast scrumhalf and certainly all the No 9s we’ve selected have got that ability.”
There’s indeed a distinctly youthful look to that group of halfbacks, headlined by the gifted 20-year-old Embrose Papier, a Junior Springbok.
“He’s an up-and-coming, potentially world-class scrumhalf. He’s demonstrated that in his age group and is a U-20 international,” said Mitchell.
“It’s time for him to be given an opportunity.”
The door isn’t shut on Paige, whose known for his great attitude, but it’s understood the Bulls won’t stand in his way if he wants more game-time at another union.
“He’s been fantastic for the union. He’s made playing here his life the past few years,” said Mitchell.
“At the end of the day, he’s recovering from his groin injury and recently also got married. A lot has changed in his life. If we get a few injuries, we’re in a very privileged position to be able to call on him.
“He’s a very infectious and enthusiastic guy. It was difficult sitting him down and giving him the news. He’s taken it as well as any player in that position. I’m unfortunately the bearer of bad news. But I have to determine which players will bring the best cohesion.”
