Former Springbok assistant coach strikes “Gold”

Gary Gold, who was Peter de Villiers' deputy at the national team and also mentored the Sharks, will coach the USA.

Worcester director of rugby and former Springbok assistant coach Gary Gold will leave the English Premiership club at the end of the season to become head coach of the United States, the club announced on Monday.

The 50-year-old South African will see out the remainder of his contract, due to expire in May, before starting his post with the United States, currently ranked 17th in the world.

Gold was one of former Springbok mentor Peter de Villiers’ deputies and held the national post from 2008 till 2011.

He also replaced the controversial Jake White as the Sharks’ director of rugby in mid-2014 but left after two years.

“I would like to thank the board for understanding my decision to accept the opportunity to coach at international level,” Gold said.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Sixways and my focus will remain on Warriors until the end of the season, where I hope to leave the club in a strong place to ensure it can be successful in the long-term.”

Worcester are rooted to the foot of the Premiership after five rounds, having secured a solitary losing bonus point.

The Springboks have representation at the club with scrumhalf Francois Hougaard being on their payroll as one of the big earners.
