Former Springbok prop Brian Mujati clearly isn’t a fan of SA Rugby’s Marvel drive to spice up local Super Rugby derbies this season.
The 34-year-old, who made 12 appearances for South Africa in 2008 before it was discovered he wasn’t a legal citizen, took to Twitter to voice a “serious question”.
Posting a picture of an empty Loftus, Mujati asked why any young player at his peak would play for “little money” in a “f**king Avengers costume”.
While it’s easy to argue that he was merely giving commentary on SA Rugby’s gimmicky approach to the 2019 campaign, Mujati actually adds to the debate over whether playing in South Africa is still commercially viable.
National coach and SA Rugby director of rugby, Rassie Erasmus, earlier this month launched a bold new contracting model aimed at making the local game more financially stable.
He specifically noted that local franchises and the Boks can’t continue trying to offer massive salaries that try to compete with the financial might of European clubs.
Needless to say, we probably wouldn’t have seen Mujati in a Captain America kit.
