Forgotten Duane’s absence could become a Bok issue

Duane Vermeulen has been largely forgotten after the Springboks’ comprehensive 3-0 series win over France but his absence for the Rugby Championship is certainly not insignificant.

French giants Toulon on Tuesday confirmed that the powerful and experienced eighthman will be out for three months after undergoing surgery for a groin problem.

“He’ll miss the start of the (European) season,” a spokesperson told AFP.

Under normal circumstances, the Springboks would shrug off that loss.

However, there are still doubts about the fitness of captain Warren Whiteley, who is still sidelined with a pelvic injury.

The inspirational No 8 already won’t play in the Super Rugby playoffs for the Lions and is currently still in a race against time to be ready for August 19’s Test against Argentina in Port Elizabeth.

The Springboks had to switch blindside flanker Jean-Luc du Preez to eighthman in the third and final Test against France last month.

He delivered an encouraging performance but is still inexperienced.

The Springboks didn’t have any other specialist No 8 in their squad and few candidates have raised their hands since then.

Meanwhile, Handre Pollard and Lionel Cronje seem to be locked in a battle to be Elton Jantjies’ understudy at flyhalf.

Both were included for a Springboks medical assessment camp in Stellenbosch next week.

No Lions, Sharks or Stormers players were considered.

Veteran Frans Steyn provided backup at No 10 against the French but plays most his rugby at centre.

“Our depth will be tested in certain positions, one of which is flyhalf,” said Springboks coach Allister Coetzee.

“With Pat Lambie out for at least the next three months, we have to ascertain what the progress is with Handré’s injury and what form he is in. Lionel has grabbed his opportunities this year and is really playing very well.”
