Thanks to their edge-of-the-seat 16-13 United Rugby Championship win against former champions, Munster, in Limerick on Saturday evening, the Bulls are now in touching distance of finishing the regular season in second place on the points table.
And coach Jake White has now targeted this coming week’s match against last season’s winners, Glasgow Warriors, who beat the Bulls in the final at Loftus Versfeld a few months ago, to help them achieve that goal. And he’s adamant this is the win the Bulls want more than any other.
“Nothing today (against Munster) would have changed the importance of next week’s game,” White was quoted as saying on sarugbymag.co.za.
’25 April 2025′
“I can tell you that after the last final, everyone wrote on their wall ’25 April 2025′. We always knew that the next time we played against them was going to be an opportunity for us to play as well as we can.
“It’s nice to go there with momentum and a positiveness, but I can promise you that from the day we started pre-season, 25 April was always going to be the game that we were going to go hard for.”
A win for the Bulls this coming Friday in Glasgow could see them move into second place on the points table at the expense of Franco Smith’s team, who’re currently second with 58 points. The Bulls right now have 54 points. Both teams have won 11 out of 15 matches.
The Bulls have got themselves into a position to push for a second place overall on the points table, with just three rounds of matches remaining before the playoffs, thanks to their excellent defensive effort in beating Munster on Saturday.
‘We are very happy’
Also, in a tight game, with few try-scoring chances, replacement flyhalf Keagan Johannes kicked the crucial penalty towards the end of the game to separate the teams.
“It’s massive and one of the biggest wins we’ve had as a group,” White said.
“More importantly, the way we played … I knew it was going to be an 80-minute slog and one of those games that goes to the wire. We really wanted to win this game, so from a momentum, confidence and log point of view, we are very happy.”
White added: “It was probably the best defensive set we’ve had for a long time. We had to keep them out and by not giving a penalty away, showing discipline.”
