Bok flyhalf Jantjies not worried about Scottish mind games

The Springboks will need to be prepared for whatever game plan Scotland throw at them when the two sides meet in their end-of-year tour clash at Murrayfield on Saturday afternoon.

The mind games were already in full flow earlier in the week when Scottish pivot Finn Russell indicated that he may look to kick the ball a lot more against the Boks, despite him being known as a more attacking flyhalf who enjoys taking the ball to the line.

His opposite number Elton Jantjies was unfazed by what Scotland will do in the match, admitting that the team will just work it out on the day while rather focussing on their own game plan in the build up.

“We will have to see what game plan they bring on Saturday … in the first 10 to 15 minutes we will know how they want to play and then we can find solutions from there,” said Jantjies.

“For us we are just focussing on ourselves as a group, we want to do better with certain things from last weekend because there is always room for improvement and we just want to get better every single week.”

Jantjies will be lining up alongside scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies, who made his debut in 2019 alongside the flyhalf in a solid Rugby Championship win over Australia, and with the two players knowing each other well they will look to combine solidly on the weekend.

The team as a whole will also be looking to take every opportunity they can in the game against a Scottish side that isn’t expected to offer up much on the day.

“It is always nice playing alongside Herschel, we are roommates and have a certain bond, so it is another chance for us to lead the boys and make sure that we execute our plan,” said Jantjies. “The aim, like always, will be to play in the right areas and keep looking for opportunities on the field.”

“It’s just an opportunity for us to play together, it’s not an individual thing for us, it’s all about the team.

“The way we play it works for us as a group, it covers everything if you look in detail. But for us as a group there is big emphasis on every single one of us looking for opportunities, and when the opportunity is there we need to take it and back ourselves to use it.”
