R100, 000 up for grabs in Challenge tournament

Tennis manufacturer Wilson announced on Tuesday that it will host the open tennis tournament again this year after the success of the inaugural tournament last year.

The Wilson R100,000 Challenge will be played over two weekends at the German Country Club, north of Johannesburg, from May 15 to 18 and 23 to 25.

The tournament will have eight divisions: an Open men and women’s events, Seniors 45+ men and women’s events, Seniors 55+ men and women’s events as well as a boys and girls’ 14 and under events. Each event will have singles and doubles draws.

Prize money will be paid from the quarter-finals, with the men’s Open singles winner receiving R20,000 and the women’s Open singles winner R7000.

The tournament will be run under the auspices of Tennis South Africa (TSA).

“Tennis is going through some exciting changes in the country,” said newly appointed TSA president, Gavin Crookes. “A tournament like this brings all the different age groups of players together at one venue to play competitively against each other but socialise off court as one big tennis family proving that tennis is, after all, the game of a lifetime.”
