The sport received a massive boost with yesterday’s announcement that the Basketball National League (BNL) will tip-off on September 27 thanks in part to a major broadcasting agreement that will see SuperSport broadcast the top flight matches for the next five years.

The competition will have 11 franchises, that will include teams like Egoli Magic, Mbombela Wildcats and Cape Mountaineers, split into a Southern and Northern Conference system as the teams get set to duke it out for a spot in the December 6 final.

“This challenge was given to us to put in place a basketball league which will have the potential to create career opportunities for players and develop the game in both rural and urban areas,” Albert Mokoena, the chairman of the BNL, said yesterday.

“This is an exciting time for us and especially for basketball players in this country. This all makes for exciting times for the sport in our country and it is now up to the players to take centre stage.”
