Netball player in serious condition after accident

One of the Sedibeng netball players involved in a road accident in the Cape was still in a very serious condition, Netball SA said on Monday.

NSA president Mimi Mthethwa said the player, who was transferred to Tygerberg Hospital in Parow, had sustained a very serious neck injury.

“She said she couldn’t feel anything, but she was very positive when we visited her this morning,” Mthethwa said.

“The doctor treating her said the first priority was to stabilise her neck. A decision will be taken later on whether or not to operate.”

The accident occurred between De Doorns and Worcester on Sunday when the players were travelling to Cape Town for the national netball championships.

The driver of the team’s minibus taxi lost control of the vehicle, which rolled down an embankment.

Six other players and support staff were still in hospital in Worcester, while five had been discharged after being treated for cuts and bruises.

Mthethwa said NSA would remain in close contact with the players and would do everything possible to provide support for them.

Arrangements were being made to bring the family of the seriously-injured player to Cape Town to be with her.
