National Extreme Festival serves up cracker at Zwartkops

Round two of the 2022 National Extreme Festival treated a large crowd to brilliant on-track action at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria on Saturday.

Top billing belonged to the Global Touring Car category, with 24 competitors taking to the tarmac.

Race one went to Robert Wolk (Chemical Logistics Toyota Corolla), leading home Saood Variawa (Toyota Gazoo Racing Corolla), Jonathan Mogotsi (Volkswagen Motorsport Golf GTI), Michael van Rooyen (Toyota Gazoo Racing Corolla) and Andrew Rackstraw (RDSA Audi S3).

Race two, started from an inverted grid, saw Julian van der Watt win in his Chemical Logistics Ford Focus, ahead of Wolk, Variawa, Van Rooyen and Mogotsi.

The first SupaCup heat was won by Keegan Campos (Turn 1 SupaPolo), ahead of Keagan Masters (Motul SupaPolo), Tato Carello (Carello SupaPolo) and Jean-Pierre van der Walt (Platinum SupaPolo).

Leyton Fourie (Express Hire SupaPolo) won the next time, followed by Arnold Neveling (Stradale SupaPolo), Jeffrey Kruger (Universal SupaPolo), Jason Campos (Campos SupaPolo) and Van der Walt.

Jonathan du Toit (TAR Lamborghini Huracan) won the first G&H Transport Extreme Supercar race from Dayne Angel (Autohaus Porsche 911 GT2 R) and Franco Scribante (Porsche 911 RSR).

In the process Du Toit set the day’s quickest lap time of 59.460 seconds. He went on to win race two as well ahead of Angel and Marius Jackson (MJR Audi R8).

Category veteran Clinton Bezuidenhout (Stu Davidson Polo) took the opening CompCare Polo Cup race from Dawie van der Merwe (Polo) and Tate Bishop (ANGRi Polo). Charl Visser (Universal Polo) won the next time out, followed by Bishop and Bezuidenhout.

Josh le Roux (RDSA Mygale) won the first Investchem Formula 1600 race from Antwan Geldenhuys (Abacus Mygale) and Andrew Schofield (Investchem Mygale). Geldenhuys won race two, ahead of Alex Vos (DVBS Mygale) and Nicolas van Weely (Magnificent Paints Van Diemen). 

Franco di Matteo (Delco Jaguar XK8) took the first Mobil 1 V8 Supercar race ahead of Terry Wilford (Fuchs Ford Falcon) and Julian Familiaris (Lube-Net Chevrolet Corvette). Mackie Adlem (Adlem Auto Jaguar XK8) won race two from Familiaris and Di Matteo.

The first DOE Formula Vee race went to Greg Wilson (Rhema), followed by Gert van den Berg (DOE Rhema) and Lendl Jansen (Bull Security Rhema).

Defending champion Greame van Breda (Stefanutti Stocks ZX10) won the first SunBet Kawasaki Masters Cup race ahead of Ronald Slamet (Vault Markets ZX10) and Jason Lamb (Tyremart ZX10).

Race two was red-flagged when Travis Naude (BUCO ZX10) and Stevie Christie (Eastern Vet ZX10) came together and fell hard coming into the pit straight.

Both riders were treated at the circuit hospital and left on their own feet. After the restart Van Breda won again, this time leading home Trevor Westman (Project Sixty ZX10) and Michael Smit (Kawasaki ZX10).

The next round of the 2022 Extreme Festival will be at the Red Star circuit on Saturday, 14 May.
