Rory McIlroy didn’t only win the one title he wanted the most, the Masters green jacket, at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, but a whole lot of money as well.

McIlroy’s victory in a playoff against Justin Rose ensured the Northern Irishman the Grand Slam of golf, winning every one of the Majors at least once — the Masters, PGA Championship, US Open and (British) Open Championship.

The 35-year-old McIlroy had previously won two PGA titles, and one each of the US Open and Open trophies.

Masters triumph

On Sunday at Augusta, McIlroy gave up a four-shot lead on the back nine at one stage to finish at 11-under-par alongside Rose, forcing the two Ryder Cup team-mates from Europe into a playoff. McIlroy birdied the first playoff hole, while Rose could only manage a par.

With the win, McIlroy was awarded a first prize of $4.2 million — in Rand terms, a whopping R79.4 million.

The total prize money up for grabs this year at the Masters was $21 million — in Rand terms, R397 million.

Second placed Rose took home $2.268 million (R42.9 million), while the two players at the bottom of the field, following the halfway cut, who finished tied for 52nd, Stephan Jaeger and Tom Kim, each banked $51.66 million, or R977,000.

The only South African to make the halfway cut, Charl Schwartzel, who won the tournament in 2011, finished in a tie for 36th place and won $96.600 — in Rand terms R1.8 million.

When Schwartzel won his title 15 years ago he was awarded $1.440 million.

Surprisingly even the players who missed the cut at the Masters this last weekend (of which there were 42) received a payout of $25,000 each (R472.750), so Thriston Lawrence and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, the two other South Africans in the field, didn’t leave Georgia completely empty handed.
