Legends looking forward to great 2015 season

The Gauteng-based Liqui Moly Inex Legends series should show remarkable growth this season.

Last year the title chase for small motorcycle-engined classic cars doubled its number of local competitors. More importantly, the Gauteng champion, Devin Robertson of Alberton, clinched the world title.

The Inex Legends world finals were held in Virginia in the US on December 7, 2014. Top-ranked Legends drivers worldwide converged on the Virginia Motor Speedway, all hoping to claim the coveted Inex Legends world title.

After two days of intense competition, Robertson emerged as the overall world champion, plus the winner of the pro division.

He was not the only South African to excel. Local saloon car racing ace Franco di Matteo ended third in the finals, while 14-year-old Lonika Maartens claimed seventh position. Getting set for this season, the formula got the welcome news Liqui Moly will again act as overall series sponsor.

As in the past, the Gauteng formula will conform to those of the American-based series, which means Robertson will be able to defend his title this year, taking his local car with him.

The Legends cars are powered by a 1 400cc Yamaha engine, weigh about 450kg and are quick enough to lap Zwartkops in about 68 seconds. The series has many cost-containing rules, such as dictating the use of just two sets of tyres per season, while restricting travel.

If you are interested in joining the series, forward your details to Kevin Hepburn at kevin@inexlegends.co.za.
