Retaining their composure in a hard-fought contest on Sunday, Raven Klaasen and Dutch partner Michaella Krajicek progressed to the second round of the mixed doubles competition at the Australian Open.
The duo was made to work for its 6-7 7-6 [10-8] victory over Andreja Klepac of Slovenia and Treat Huey of the Philippines in the opening round at Melbourne Park.
Klaasen, the only SA player in the main draw of the Grand Slam tournament after injured world No 80 Kevin Anderson opted out of the singles contest, was eliminated from the men’s doubles earlier in the week with American partner Rajeev Ram.
