Ill Oosthuizen SA’s only Masters contender

The 2010 Open champion is the only South African left in the competition after Tim Clark, Trevor Immelman, Branden Grace, Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel all failed to make the cut.

Oosthuizen’s manager, Louis Martin, said that the South African had been vomiting during the morning, adding that it was “touch-and-go whether he would be able to compete in the round.”

Martin had no idea what had caused the illness.

Oosthuizen bogeyed the third and the seventh holes to lie two over at the turn and then double-bogeyed the 11th and added another bogey on the 13th.

He pulled shots back on the 15th and the last hole to leave himself with an outside chance in Sunday’s last round.

As he came off the course, he signed his card and then headed straight to the medical centre to be placed on the drip again, Martin said. From there he was going to go home to sleep.

Zimbabwean Brendon De Jonge, who is playing in his first Masters event, shot a 76 to lie six over for the tournament.

2012 champion Bubba Watson, who beat Oosthuizen in a play-off that year, tops the leaderboard along with rookie Jordan Spieth on five under par.
