The early money came, he was backed from 16-1 into around 14-10 before he drifted back to 5-2 at the off.
The on-course presenters all claimed this son of Rebel King looked a picture and who could blame them as we all watched him go down to the start. There was a word of warning from trainer Charles Laird his charge might need the run and the experience but why worry what the trainer says? After all, the talk was there, the money was on and he looked the part.
A few moments after the gates opened supporters of Y’rtheone knew our fate. He broke slowly and was caught wide and not handling the turn particularly well. He did move up for a bit to give us some remnant of hope but he would have had to be a Frankel to have sustained the run. He faded out late to finish 12.40 lengths behind Mountain Boy.
Y’rtheone returned to Polytrack three weeks later over 1000m with Anton Marcus up. This time he drifted from 22-10 to 11-2 and broke well, showed some speed but was outpaced late to finish third, beaten 5.75 lengths behind Swakopmund who was sent off 5-10 favourite and was a winner by 4.25 lengths.
Tonight could be Y’rtheone’s chance. He runs in Race 4 in a Maiden Plate over 1200m and this good-looking colt is well drawn at No 3, has Marcus back in the irons, and should have the measure of his opposition.
