Woodruff saddles Summer Cup favourite

Trainer Geoff Woodruff will no doubt be pleased that Louis The King, an ante-post favourite for the Sansui Summer Cup drew starting stall seven at the announcement of the field and subsequent draw at Turffontein Racecourse on Wednesday.

Held at the yard of trainer Joey Soma – who has Athina entered – the field for this year’s renewal of the R2-million race over 2 000m on November 29 was unveiled with the host’s charge drawing gate 16.

Woodruff has four other runners entered and will be looking to once again saddle the winner of this race to follow up on Yorker’s effort last year.

The stable has Killua Castle, Master Sabina, Rakes Chestnut and Lockheed Jetstar entered. Killua Castle drew widest of the Woodruff inmates at 18 while the other three runners drew 11, two and six respectively.

Meanwhile, Bezanova, a recent winner of the Charity Mile, drew starting stall number four which will have pleased jockey Weichong Marwing and trainer Alec Laird. The Randjesfontein-based conditioner has three other runners entered with As You Like, Earl of Derby and Bouclette Top representing the yard.

Top weight for this year’s renewal will be carried by No Worries with the Gavin van Zyl inmate carded to carry 60kg while Enchanted Silk will be the bottom weight with 52kg on her back.

Trainer Joey Ramsden has entered Disco Al as a raider from his base in Cape Town and his charge will jump from pole position while another raider from outside Johannesburg will line up in the form of Wavin’ Flag from the Brett Crawford stable.
