Standing ovation for new champion jockey S’manga Khumalo

Vodacom Durban July winner Legislate was named Horse Of The Year at Wednesday night’s Equus Awards held at Emperors Palace.

Legislate, who won three Grade 1 races, was also named Champion Three-Year-Old Colt and Champion Middle Distance horse.

It was a great evening for Champion Trainer Justin Snaith, who trains Legislate, as he also saw another stable inmate, In The Fast Lane, named Three-Year-Old Filly.

The biggest applause of the night was for S’manga Khumalo, who became South Africa’s first black Champion Jockey.

Chairman of the Equus Committee, Larry Wainstein commented: “It is fantastic that the Equus Awards give the lifeblood of the sport the platform to come together in celebration of the success of our peers as well as the past season.”
