With the Justin Snaith yard churning out winners it could pay to go with Razed In Black to win Race 7 on the Polytrack at Fairview today.
With R350 000 up for grabs in the Grade 3 Betting World Algoa Cup over 2000m, it comes as no surprise that trainers from all over the country are raiding for what some might see as easy pickings at Fairview today.
Those who know Port Elizabeth racing well will be fully aware it is not as easy as it looks. That is probably why Justin Snaith, who has a satellite yard in the Eastern Cape, has no less than five runners in this event.
Champion trainer Sean Tarry, who won last year with Stonehenge, planned to run two horses but Cagiva has been withdrawn leaving him with Halve The Deficit to be ridden by S’manga Khumalo.
In addition, Vaughan Marshall has brought Dynastic Power while Brett Crawford saddles Nebula.
One has to go with Snaith to win this as he has a number of good horses, but none might be better than Captain Splendid, winner of the East Cape Derby over 2400m at this course. He has had three runs this season and should be fit and well. The only concern is whether he will find the trip a touch too short. Grant van Niekerk takes the ride.
Halve The Deficit took on some top horses during the year and did not really lose his form. He has been running well in his last few starts and should contest the finish.
With all the visitors life could be difficult for the local trainers but if one is capable of collecting the big cheque it is Alan Greeff and Welsh Emperor. He finished a 1.75-length second behind Captain Splendid in the Derby but he probably found the distance too far.
He has won over the distance and with Greg Cheyne up, is a worthy flag bearer for the PE trainers.
