Even for multiple record-breaking conditioner Sean Tarry, 2016- 7 has been a great season and the victory of Bull Valley in the Mercury Sprint on Saturday was made even sweeter by the fact he broke his own record for the number of wins in a season.
The mark of 209 was set a year ago and might have been expect- ed to stand for a while.
But with two weeks to spare the “Ruler of Randjes” surpassed that number when his talented Toreador gelding comfortably ac- counted for the rest of the Grade 1 eld at Greyville. It gave the trainer his seventh Grade 1 trophy this season.
The old earnings record of just less than R28 million was set by Tarry last season and he smashed that a while back.
While Tarry had a rare scoreless day at Turffontein yesterday, his stake earnings this year amounted to R34,573,475 a er Bull Valley’s Mercury Sprint win.
He has trained 211 winners this season.
With R5.5 million still up for grabs during the two days of the inaugural Gold Cup Festival of Racing at Greyville on 29 and 30 July, who knows what number Tarry will end up with.
It seems safe to say that what- ever the end-of-season earnings record ends up being, it will be in the record books for quite a few years.
No, cancel that foolish thought: this is Sean Tarry we are talking about after all! – TA- Bonline.
