Princess looks too royal for opposition

It takes a good horse to win four races in a row – and sometimes some shrewd tactics from the connections.

Princess Varunya could have both going for her when she lines up for Race 7 at Greyville today, with this race taking place on the turf track. There are eight races on the card with the first four being run on the Polytrack.

Princess Varunya has raced eight times for three wins, four seconds and one unplaced performance which was on debut over 1200m.

She ran second behind some decent fillies over 1600m but all that changed when trainer Kom Naidoo put his charge over 2000m. She was a runaway winner of her maiden and then followed up with a one-length victory over Silver Inspiration over 1900m. Both of these runs were on the Polytrack.

The Australian-bred daughter of High Chaparral had raced twice at Scottsville on turf – the first in her unplaced debut run and later over 1600m in which she finished a short-head second behind Way Out Front. Naidoo put her back on the turf over 2000m at Greyville and the three-year-old filly came from off the pace to beat Classe Mondiale by 2.75 lengths.

On her runs to date Princess Varunya looks well above average but Naidoo seems to have found her the perfect race. This is not the strongest of fields and with just 54.5kg to carry she will be very hard to peg back. In fact, at this stage she is looking a bright prospect to run in the Grade 1 Woolavington 2000 during the KwaZulu-Natal winter season.

Anthony Delpech rode her to two of her victories and is back in the irons again. The balance of the field looks average with the only possible dangers coming from Supercede and the Belinda Impey-trained pairing of Barcelona Babe and Princes Beach.
