Pick 6 will be the main play of day

With a carryover of R150,000 and the expected huge pool that could follow at Arlington today, most punters will be focused on the Pick 6 and trainer Jacques Strydom could have a banker in the form of Gianduja in Race 5, a MR 90 Handicap over 1800m.

With the reapplication of blinkers, this six-year-old bounced back to his best form with an easy 3.25-length win over Jupiter Symphony in his penultimate start and then a head defeat by Astro News last time.

In his latest run, the Silvano gelding was slowly away by two lengths and although Astro News always looked likely to win the race, it got desperately close and a photo had to be called for to decide the result. This course and distance clearly suits Gianduja and jockey Andrew Nienaber gets on well with him. Jumping from pole position might force a more positive early position.

Zezinho Campeao was only 0.50 lengths behind Gianduja last time and is 2kg better off, so could have the beating of his adversary but it has been just over a year since he last won a race and he looks less than willing at the finish.

Jupiter Symphony is 4kg better off for a 3.25-length beating over this track and distance so could also get closer but he has also not won for some time and maybe a stake cheque is the best his connections can hope for.

The Justin Snaith yard continues to plunder races in the Eastern Cape so one must respect the chances of Skippyjon Jones, despite a 111-day break.

Placido, White House and Big Winter Chill all have place chances, but Gianduja could book his place in the Algoa Cup (Grade 3), which has always been his intended mission.
