The Tony Rivalland-trained three-year-old colt has done all of his racing up the straight at Scottsville so far and in five career races, all over 1200m, he has a record of two wins, one second and two third placings.
The Australian-bred son of Mossman is well weighted under the race conditions but there are two concerns. The first is whether he will handle the turn and the second is that this will be his first race under lights.
Fortunately Highway Explorer will have the experience of Marcus to help guide through any unchartered waters.
The only danger looks to be Fortissimo, also a two-time winner, who is trained by Garth Puller. The three-year-old gelding has won twice on the Polytrack but his only race on turf was a disaster. However, that was in the KZN Guineas Trial and the 1600m may not have suited him. He pulled from the start and compounded late in the race.
