Is Miss Varlicious good enough?

As shown on Saturday with Majmu at Turffontein, it is a tough task for three-year-old fillies. That question could be answered on Tuesday though as trainer Paul Gadsby will saddle up the filly to compete in Race 7, a MR 86 Handicap over 1000m at Scottsville.

This Var filly was most impressive when winning over this course and distance last month but the handicappers have not been kind and her mark of net 82 is a high one. Particularly after her six length win was over the struggling Barega. Her draw in stall No 8 is also not in her favour.

She could help punters crack the Pick 6 which starts at 1.40pm with a carryover of R300,000 and an expected pool of R1,4-million. If Miss Varlicious comes through this test, then a crack at a feature is sure to follow. As much as there are questions about Miss Varlicious, there are also questions about her opposition.

Muscatt is coming off a long losing streak and will need to give weight away to the whole field. This five-year-old Victory Moon gelding is also plagued by a breathing problem which has certainly cost him more wins. Astro makes his debut for the Duncan Howells yard and if this gelding can find his best form over a trip that suits he has to be considered.

Sabre Edge and Tonto are both improving and it will not be a surprise if either or both were to run well. Trainer Dennis Drier and jockey Sean Cormack look the key combination for exotic players as William Of Wembley in Race 4 and The Tripster in Race 8 look likely to head the betting and could be banker bets.
