Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup 2014: Girls vs Girls

With a R2 Million purse up for grabs in the feature race, excitement is guaranteed, but there’s also plenty of other appeal to the day – from fashion to fun, dazzling hospitality offerings and the chance to rub shoulders with the country’s most beautiful people.

Adding to the exhilaration of the day is the Racing. It’s a Rush Celebrity Charity Dash, which will see 20 of the country’s biggest names competing on the racecourse , to handover R475 000 to  SOS Children’s Villages. There’s plenty of brawn on show, but model Tamerin Jardine and actor Jay Anstey will be adding plenty of beauty – and brains – to the mix.

Tamerin has a Law degree from the University of Johannesburg, is a successful model, MC and on the back of her status as Miss Earth South Africa in 2012, hosts workshops on all things ‘green’. Jay graduated from Pretoria Technikon with a National Diploma in Dramatic Arts and has appeared in a number of TV series and movies at home and abroad, including Isidingo, Rhythm City, Tropika Island of Treasure and Sleeper’s Wake.

The day features a total of 12 races, with the main event featuring top thoroughbreds challenging one another over 2 000 metres for a stake of R2 million. Picture: Michel Bega

Who do you see as your biggest threat on the track in the Racing. It’s a Rush Celeb Charity Dash?

Jay: The boys! Specifically Jonathan and Simba. Those boys are fit!

Tamerin: Simba and Jonathan. Even though they’re used to the good life, they’re extremely fit. Also, I heard a rumour that Simba use to be a sprinter, so I think he has this one down.

Why did you agree to participate in the Racing. It’s a Rush Celeb Charity Dash?

Jay: Any chance to participate in something that helps raise money for a charity is a no brainer!

Tamerin: This will be my third time running the Celeb Charity Dash. I think it’s important for us to give back to others, and this is a unique way of bringing celebs, charity and horse racing together. No matter who wins, SOS Children’s Villages win!

Do you know anything about the work SOS Children’s Village does? Why do you want to win the money for them?

Jay: The work they are doing is great. Humanity needs to come together and look after each other and I believe it starts with children.

Tamerin: What they do is imperative for the children of South Africa. They protect our children and their rights. It’s an amazing focus for this year’s Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup as protecting our children is one of Madiba’s living dreams.

Can you tell us anything about your outfit for the big day?

Jay: I’m going for something different. Androgyny is my theme for this year’s event…

Tamerin: I can’t say much because I love my dress and want to keep it secret – what I am going to say, is it’s definitely all about my hat!!

What’s your secret weapon for the race?

Jay: Well I might try use distraction as a tactic…

Tamerin: I am planning on tripping people… I’m joking! Maybe I’ll use my charm and booty to distract the men!
