French Navy to rake it in

Rake’s Chestnut gets a great opportunity to prove he is not just a one-race wonder when he runs in Race 2 at the Vaal today, a Conditions Plate over 1800m on the standside track.

Take his short head second behind Legislate in the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 at Greyville out of his resume and he is nothing more than just a moderate one-time winner. Geoff Woodruff’s charge has not always had the best of luck and did go into the Sansui Summer Cup a little underdone. However, he ran poorly, never improving his position and ended up in 13th place, 10.50 lengths off stable companion Louis The King.

Despite being the best handicapped runner, most of his merit rating is based on his Daily News run so that does not match the form.

It could be a better bet to go with the improving French Navy, who earmarked himself as a SA Derby candidate when running a superb third in the Grade 2 Dingaans. He was beaten 5.50 lengths but was hugely under sufferance and is almost certain to improve over this distance. Regular rider Raymond Danielson rides Sean Tarry’s charge.

The meeting has been moved from Turffontein due to but all the rain but this race is unlikely to be affected.
