Don’t wait for Katie in the Cape

This daughter of Jay Peg was a convincing winner of her sprint debut early in her juvenile season.

A crack at a juvenile feature saw her come unstuck but even at that early stage it did seem a step up in trip could see her at her best.

Returning after a rest in August, the now three-year-old may have just needed the run, but she was by no means disgraced with her promising fourth behind Jo’s Bond over 1000m.

The step up to 1300m in her next start saw her finish second to My Emblem at Durbanville.

The further rise in trip to 1600m is what she needs and stable jockey Grant van Niekerk will be aboard her from a good draw.

Lovely Rita and Francia look to be the dangers.

With racing back at Kenilworth, fields have got a lot bigger and 16 runners will go to post for the opening event. Runners from the Joey Ramsden yard usually make good improvement from their first start so the Australian-bred Whisky Baron could be ready to go close.

Race 2 looks competitive and it is nice to see an imported Irish filly, Folk Law, step out for the Brett Crawford yard. However, this daughter of Arcano returns from a lengthy break so might be in need of the outing.

Adam Marcus sends out Crystal Cavern and although the 1200m is short of her very best she could race fresh enough to run well.
