Coltrane can give Joostes, Ramsden a 2400m double

Ramsden will probably be in Port Elizabeth on Sunday to watch St Tropez contest the SW Security Solutions SA East Cape Derby over 2400m at Fairview due off at 3.10pm.

But he, as well as the Joostes, will no doubt be keeping a careful eye on Greyville at 4.10pm, when Coltrane lines up for the Highway Aged Highland Night Cup (Non-Black Type), also over 2400m.

Coltrane, the Argentinian-bred son of Giant’s Causeway looked to going nowhere six months ago but suddenly, during the Cape summer season, he got his mojo back.

He won the Grade 3 Cape Summer Stayers over 2500m at odds of 25-1, dead heated with Current Event in a Pinnacle Stakes over 2800m, finished a 1.25 -length second behind Kingston Mines in the Grade 2 J&B Stayers over 2800m, and then won the Grade 3 Chairman’s Cup over 3200m – all at Kenilworth.

Ramsden rested the five-year-old gelding and then gave him a pipe-opener over 1750m in the Listed Sledgehammer at Scottsville last month in which he ran on well to finish 3.60 lengths behind Solar Star.

That should have brought him on nicely and Coltrane looks ready to notch up his seventh career victory.

The main threat looks to be Gone Baby Gone who ran second behind Coltrane in the Chairman’s Cup. However, Glen Kotzen’s runner is now 3kg worse off and unless Coltrane races poorly in his second run after a layoff, Gone Baby Gone looks to have little chance of reversing the placings.

Other dangers include Kolkata, Akii Bua, Solid Speed, Crime Victim and Jay Power.
