Captain America looks a premier bet

After having lived in the shadow of Legislate for his last five starts, Captain America gets his chance to stake a claim for a Cape summer season victory when he steps out in the Grade 2 Vasco Premier Trophy over 1800m at Kenilworth tomorrow.

This Brett Crawford-trained runner looked to be something special when winning four races in a row, including victory in the Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes in which he defeated Red Ray by 1.25 lengths. He was probably a touch unlucky in last year’s Cape Guineas when spreading a shoe in the running and going down by a head to Elusive Gold.

After that all he managed to see was the rear end of Legislate but Justin Snaith’s charge is not in this race and that should open the door for this son of Captain Al. He has been gelded and hopefully will not pull as badly as he has tended to do in the past. Captain America is well weighted under the race conditions and as long as he runs to form, should be hard to beat. Corne Orffer rides.

Helderberg Blue has started to behave and is now showing the sort of form trainer Mike Bass expected of him. He has beaten Power King in their last two starts and is weighted to do so again.
