It took only two starts for Royal Zulu Guard to get out of the maiden ranks and his future appeared bright, but although he ran many good races in defeat a second win appeared to be elusive. In the end it was a case of 13th race lucky before he scored his second victory.
Trainer Duncan Howells has the knack of getting the best out of a horse and it only took him three starts to find out what brings out the best in Royal Zulu Guard. Jockey Kevin Shea gets on well with the Australian import and the six-point penalty Royal Zulu Guard received for his win does not look enough to stop another win or two.
Copybook might have found the company of Legislate a bit too much last time and was well beaten in finishing eighth, 9.25 lengths off the winner, in the KRA Guineas (Grade 2) at Greyville. Jockey Anton Marcus should get a good deal out of Copybook from a good No 2 draw. This Argonaut gelding has shown a liking to this track.
Silva Hawk from the Sean Tarry yard was showing good form before running unplaced behind Louis The King in the Grade 1 SA Classic over 1800m at Turffontein. This son of Silvano was reportedly not striding out so that run may best be ignored.
The filly, Masked Lady, is best off at the weights and is clearly battling to find her very best form but she must hold a chance of earning stake money for her owners.
Patriotic Rebel returns from a 158-day lay-off but does have ability and could pop up in the minor placings.
