History made in Scribante VW Cup events
A local hero won and a youngster made history at the Aldo Scribante circuit on Saturday, during the day's two Engen Volkswagen Cup races.
SO YOUNG. At the age of 14, Sheldon van der Linde (Ferodo Polo), on Saturday became the youngest South African driver to win a national saloon car event. Picture: Dave Ledbitter.
Local racer Daniel Rowe (Ferodo Polo) stepped up to the challenge of racing in front of his home crowd by claiming the day’s opening race victory and extended his points lead in the championship.
Rowe was followed across the finish line by Ferodo teammate Sheldon van der Linde and Dewald Brummer (Grand Prix Models Polo).
Van der Linde led race two from pole position to flag, leading home Mathew Hodges (M3 – ITR Africa Polo) and Daniel Rowe.
Van der Linde’s outing at Scribante was only his third event in the championship and he became the youngest driver ever, at age 14, in South African motorsport to win a national saloon car event.
Sheldon is the younger brother of Kelvin, past Engen Volkswagen Cup champion, Scirocco R-Cup champion and current competitor in the ADAC GT Masters championship.
Defending champion Robert Wolk (Midas FVW) won both of the day’s Formula Volkswagen races.
On both occasions, he was chased to the flag by Nicholas van Weely (Anglorand FVW) and Wesleigh Orr (Hollard FVW).
In the Midas Formula 1600 category Keegan Campos (Hollard Mygale) grabbed the opening race victory from Scott Temple (Investchem Mygale).
Then Temple turned the tables on Campos to claim victory in the closing stages of the second race.
Graham Hepburn (Suburban Body Mygale) put himself on the podium with two third-place finishes on the day.
