Head for Zwartkops and drool over the classic cars

Officially, Saturday's main race at Zwartkops will be the South African Tourist Trophy for Pre-1966 Le Mans Sports and GT cars.


The 45-minute event will see 33 cars taking to the tarmac, with a wide array of classic racers entered.

The race includes a mandatory three-minute pit stop and the option to change drivers, though most competitors will elect to drive on their own.

Topping the list will be the Remos Ford GT40 of the evergreen Franco Scribante, the Lola T70 Spyder of Rui Campos, the RAM Ford GT40 of Ross Lazarus, the Shelby Mustang of Frans van Maarschalkerwaard, the Chevrolet Corvette of Michiel Campagne and the Lola T70 Spyder of Mark and Jonathan du Toit.

Sarel van der Merwe and Michael Briggs will share a Daytona Coupe, as will Peter Lindenberg and Peter Jenkins.

Keith Hinckley and Leeroy Poulter will take turns in an AC Cobra.

The Ford GT40 models will be driven by Swedes Kenneth Persson/Lennart Bohlin, Roland Zoomers/Elso Bergsma, Jan Kling, Craig Shorter and Oliver Dalias.

The midfield battles should include Brian Cooke/Brian Rowlings (Lotus Cortina), Clive Rive (GSM Dart), Nick Parrot (MGA), Marius Roberts (GSM Dart), Colin Clay/ Roman de Beer (Daytona Coupe), plus British drivers Eddie Perk (Lenham) and Bill Watt (Lotus Elan).

  •  The races for Genie Pre-1974 International Sports Prototypes should see Neil Lobb (Lola T70), Franco Scribante (Chevron B19), Colin Frost (Porsche 917), Roman de Beer (Porsche 917), Colin Clay (Lola T70), Peter Jenkins (Lola T19), Jonathan du Toit (Chevron B8) and George Avvocomides (Porsche RSR) fighting for the podium places.

Others to watch should include Rui Campos (Porsche 917), Carel Pienaar (Chev Camaro), Jason Campos (Porsche RSR), Dirk Waaijenberg (Chevron B19) and Roland Zoomers (Ford GT40).

  •  Single-seater fans should enjoy the events for such cars of the 1950s and 1960s.

Interesting cars will include Eddie Perk’s LDS Ford, Heys Stead’s MG Special Spider, Rodney Green’s Cooper Bristol, Lew Baker’s Mallock, Clive Winterstein’s Elva Porsche, Alex Morton’s Lotus 21, Brian Tyler’s Cooper Ford and Dave Alexander’s Alfa LDS.
