DJ Darren Scott shares heart-warming story about son Mark and Ernie Els

"He was so amazing, holding Mark and chatting to him."

Golf icon Ernie Els has been praised for his humility, taking the time to show support for a young fan.

In a social media post, veteran radio and TV presenter Darren Scott shared a story about how Els had twice met his son (Mark) who faced a battle with cancer.

Over a decade ago, according to Scott, Els turned up at a golf day at the Copperleaf course in Centurion which was being held to raise funds for his son’s medical treatments.

“He was so amazing that day, holding Mark and chatting to him, even though Mark had no idea who he was, nor actually remembers the moment,” Scott said.

Reunion in the US

Older now and having become a big fan of the legendary golfer, Mark met Els again over the weekend, this time at the Senior PGA Championship outside Dallas where the four-time Major champion walked the back nine with the Scott family.

“He immediately broke into a big smile when he saw and remembered Mark, and spent time chatting with the kids and us,” Scott posted.

“If you’ve ever wondered why this man is one of the most popular in professional golf, and is loved the world over, it’s because of his easy, humble and genuinely down-to-earth friendliness and compassion for people.”
