Davis Cup match officials named

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Tennis South Africa (TSA) on Thursday revealed the match officials for the upcoming Davis Cup between South Africa and Monaco.


South Africa kick-starts its campaign to regain its spot in next year’s Euro Africa Group 1, when the team takes on Monaco at the Irene Country Club in Pretoria from January 31 to February 2.

Experienced umpire Wael Abbas of Egypt has been named as the referee and ITF representative at the tie, while Pieter Hoeksma and George Phiri will be the two chair umpires.

Abbas, a professional official on the international circuit has officiated at all four of the Grand Slams, Olympic and Commonwealth Games and is vastly experienced in officiating in Davis Cup competition.

He is no stranger to South Africa having officiated at the ATP South African Open at Montecasino and the Soweto Open.
