The Proteas finally confirm Ottis Gibson as their new coach

After a month of speculation, Cricket South Africa nab their preferred candidate to take the national side to the World Cup.

The wait is finally over … the Proteas have a new head coach.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Wednesday confirmed the rather unsurprising news that Ottis Gibson will be the man in the hot seat.

The 48-year-old West Indian, who will leave his post as England’s bowling coach, will commence his duties in mid-September.

“His playing and coaching credentials are impressive and that will place the Proteas in good hands as we move towards a big home summer with both India and Australia visiting us,” said CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat.

“Having spent a great part of his playing career in South Africa, Ottis is familiar with our country and that should help him to settle in quickly with our national team.”

Gibson’s initial contract is scheduled to last until the ICC World Cup in England in mid-2019.

He’ll be able to appoint his own assistants.

His predecessor, Russell Domingo, won’t be sidelined entirely.

He’ll be the new full-time South Africa A coach and previously stated that he wanted to remain involved in South African cricket.

“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Russell Domingo for his positive contributions during his time with the Proteas and I am delighted he will remain in our setup as head coach of the South Africa A side. This is an important position that prepares our up-and-coming players in the next stage of their journey to become potential Proteas,” said Lorgat.
