Champ Tommy Gun ready to fire

There's just under a month to go until Tommy Oosthuizen steps into the ring to defend his IBO super-middleweight title for the seventh time.

He’ll walk out at Emperors Palace to take on Ezequiel Maderna, a foe he’s seen in action first hand, and he’s leaving nothing to chance as he ramps up preparations under trainer Harold Volbrecht ahead of the bout.

“Preparations have been going well. We’re ready for the fight and come November 9, we will be in tip-top shape,” the champion, who is coming off a disappointing draw against Brandon Gonzalez back in June, said yesterday.

“We’re getting there now and everything’s coming together. Harold’s been strict in the gym.

“I’ve seen him fight live and I don’t think he’s a bad fighter,” Oosthuizen said, referring to his opponent’s 20-1 record. Maderna’s solitary loss came against Edwin Rodriguez back in March.

“He’s tough so I’m not underestimating him. Credit is due to him because he’s a very tough fighter. He’s polished and got a nice style but at the end of the day speed makes the difference, not power.

“Boxing’s an art of the mind and I do that very well. Once we make him miss we’ll make him pay,” said Oosthuizen, who has yet to lose in 23 outings.
