Chad le Clos ‘gutted’ by Durban’s Commonwealth snub

Two of South Africa’s prominent athletes have expressed two distinctly different views to Durban losing its right to host 2022’s Commonwealth Games.

Swimming kingpin Chad le Clos said he was “gutted” to hear the city’s fate after the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced on Monday that it was looking for another host.

The 24-year-old, a multiple Olympic medal-winner, was born in Durban.

In contrast, javelin star Sunette Viljoen – who won silver in Rio – was quick to pounce on a more populist view.

She believes South African sport could’ve invested the R118 million spent on the bid far more effectively.

Viljoen grabbed headlines last year when she fought with sports minister Fikile Mbalula over unpaid bonuses promised to Olympic medal winners by government.
