Australian competitors dominated the elite races at the annual Midmar Mile open water swim in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.
Nick Sloman tore clear of the rest of the field to win the elite men’s 1.6km contest in 17:01, just one second outside the race record.
Michael McGlynn edged out the chasing group in a tight battle to take second place in 17:28, while Danie Marais grabbed the bottom step of the podium in 17:29.
Former 5km world champion Chad Ho, who was aiming for his eighth career victory at the popular event, settled for seventh position.
In the women’s race, Kareena Lee coasted to a convincing victory, securing a double for the Australian contingent.
Lee completed the race in 18:20, more than a minute ahead of former winner Michelle Weber, who took second place.
Weber was the first South African across the line, clocking 19:26, with Samantha Randle finishing third a further three seconds behind.
