Surfer Heather Clark departs on a 36 hour trip to Surf City, El Salvador, on Monday next week.
Heather will represent South Africa at her fifth International Surfing Association (ISA) World Masters Championships.
She has spent the past month on an extensive fundraiser to enable her to cover her travel expenses.
Heather is thankful to the business community, family and friends who have helped her reach the target needed to get overseas.
She is excited to compete and to catch up with friends from all over the world with whom she used to be on tour.
“The competition is going to be good as everyone I was on tour with is still surfing and doing well.”
Sneaking a peek at the weather forecast, Heather says it looks like El Salvador is going to have a swelteringly hot summer.
Temperatures can reach 35 degrees, with the water temperature reaching up to 28 degrees.
Heather is no stranger to bringing home gold and silver medals from international surfing competitions over the years.
In 2008, she and her team won gold medals in Peru. She clinched her second world title in Panama in 2010, with Team SA claiming silver overall.
Then, she and team SA scooped silver in Ecuador in 2013.
ISA President Fernando Aguerre said the level of surfing and competitiveness was expected to be of a high level, with some 40 surfers expected.
“I am thrilled at the opportunity to see the world’s best back in action on Sunzal’s amazing waves. This event is a true celebration of surfing,” he said.
