Mtwalume family finally buries son

The body of Siyanda was 'damaged' and more families came forward claiming that it could have been one of their family members.

Siyanda Ndlovu (16) has finally been laid to rest, much to the relief of his family. This comes after a long ordeal to have his body identified.

His grandmother, Makhosi Ndlovu of Mtwalume, said Siyanda drowned while swimming with friends in June this year.

She said that, at the time, police were unable to conduct a search.

The family then saw a post on social media that a body had been found at the beach.

Police asked the family to supply a photo of Siyanda to help identify him.

The body was ‘damaged’, and other families came forward claiming that it could be one of their family members.

The family then had a DNA test done in July to prove it was Siyanda so that they could bury him.

However, they then had to endure a long wait for the results to return.

Finally, a policeman from Pretoria offered to help them, and eventually, in September, they received the results.

“The results came back positive, proving that it was my grandson, and we have since laid him to rest,” she said.

Ndlovu said she was grateful that the matter was over and she could return to her place of work in Gauteng.

In a separate story, Sphamandla Dlamini was found dead in a sugarcane field in Ixopo five years ago.

The family, however, has not yet buried him as they are waiting for DNA results.

His sister Gugu explained that the family was instructed to have tests done.

Despite several test samples being taken, they are still waiting.

She said when police went to collect the remains in the sugarcane field, they went back to check if there were any belongings of her brother’s and found part of a skull with hair.

“We phoned the police to let them know, but the then investigating officer told us to keep these remains.”

Dlamini says they still have not received the results and still have the remains.

She says they have repeatedly asked police and the forensic department to collect these remains, but they have not.

The Herald last week again made several attempts to contact the relevant office but to no avail.
