DAWN highlights need for maternity ward in Midvaal

The objective is to urge the Gauteng Department of Health to intervene in local health care facilities. Teixeira said many expectant mothers have to travel great distances, albeit in their first trimester, or during birth.

MIDVAAL – The DA Women’s Network (DAWN) in Midvaal has highlighted a dire need for the establishment of a Maternity Ward at the Meyerton Clinic.

DAWN did this through a petition which it submitted at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. The group of women were accompanied by the DA Gauteng Shadow Health MEC, MPL Jack Bloom.

DAWN Midvaal Interim Chairperson Refiloe Teixeira said the petition had accumulated more than one thousand signatures.

The petition outlined that establishing a maternity ward at the local clinic would ensure safer, more accessible care for mothers and newborns, strengthen the community’s health, and reduce the burden on other regional hospitals.

Teixeira says: “The goal of the petition is to ensure that a Maternity Ward is urgently established at the Meyerton Clinic. Due to a growing economy in Midvaal Local Municipality, the area’s population has started to grow in such a way that the Meyerton Clinic can no longer adequately cater to the needs of residents.

The objective is to urge the Gauteng Department of Health to intervene in local health care facilities. Teixeira said many expectant mothers have to travel great distances, albeit in their first trimester, or during birth.

“This poses a significant health risk to both mother and child. The Gauteng Department of Health’s vision is to provide high-quality, efficient and accessible healthcare to transform people’s lives.”

“A crucial part of this is that the department capacitates itself with the right systems and equipment. It goes without saying that to provide the needed healthcare services to expectant mothers, the department must establish a maternity ward where needed.”
