Paddlers selected for South African Sprint Championships

SANDTON – The South African Sprint Championships are set to take place in Cape Town from April 23 to 25 at Lomond Dam.

A number of local paddlers were selected for the Gauteng team to represent the province at the upcoming South African Sprint Championships.

Paddlers were selected at the provincial sprint races hosted by the Gauteng Canoe Union at the Victoria Lake Club at Germiston Lake on February 5.

The South African Sprint Championships are set to take place in Cape Town from April 23 to 25 at Lomond Dam. Paddlers took part in races including 200m, 500m and 1 000m. Jennie Dallas of the Gauteng Canoe Union said, “The event also doubled as the first 2022 Gauteng Canoe Union Schools League event and juniors are looking forward to participating in the South African Schools League Championships at the end of April.”

“A Gauteng team reflecting all ages from Under 8 to Great Grand Masters was identified and the paddlers are training seriously in order to challenge the other racers at the interprovincial event.” Among those selected from the Sandton area were Kayla Szalay (U16 female) [from St Teresa’s School] and U16 males including Bruno Cochrane, Jordan Klopper, Theo Dreyer, Tome Dos Santos from St David’s Marist College. U18s Finlay Leask and Luke Salmon were also selected as well as U18 female Caitlyn Evans [from St Teresa’s School].
