Poetry in performance explored at Market Theatre

NEWTOWN - The realm of "poetry in performance" will be explored in a new play written and directed by Jefferson Tshabalala.

Poet.O.Type, featuring Billy Langa and Mbali Malinga, will open at the Market Theatre this month.

The play follows the journey of an eager student as he contends with the lessons offered by his dynamic mentor.

“The play observes the relationship between two poets; the Guru and the Grasshopper,” said theatre spokesperson Lusanda Zokufa.

“The Guru is the founder, owner and head chef of a modest catering company with only one employee, the Grasshopper.”

Although the catering company is in dire straits, the Guru refuses to take on contracts he believes are not in line with his socio-political stance or his passion for fine cuisine.

“The Grasshopper is baffled by the Guru’s refusal, as it stunts their chances to improve the company’s fate,” she said.

Zokufa added that the play will explore the realm of “poetry in performance”, a “thrilling landscape within the underbelly of South Africa’s art house circles”.

“Subjected to scrutiny, the poets negotiate this illusive and mysterious underworld with the more urgent and conventional real world,” she said.

The play will be presented by Kiri Pink Nob in association with the Market Theatre.

Poet.O.Type will run from 15 until 20 July at the Market Theatre, 56 Margaret Mcingana Street, Newtown.
