The Zone gets 3D oreo street art

Oreo SA is preparing to recreate the world’s favourite biscuit into a 3-D high-impact chalk art street sketch.

At The Zone in Rosebank from 4 to 8 June, local artist Mak1One will be helping bring Oreo to life on a grand scale – by using just chalk.

Turning the streets into art, the 3D Oreo chalk sketch is created in celebration of the biscuit’s first-ever global movie sponsorship.

The twist, lick and dunk favourite has partnered with Paramount Pictures for the Global Release of Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, releasing in South Africa on June 27.

“We’re excited to see the small iconic biscuit come to life in a big way with the 3D chalk art as we want to showcase to fans how big of a brand the little Oreo biscuit is,” said Tasmin Darroch, category leader: biscuits, beverages and groceries at Mondelez South Africa.

The brand turned to South Africa’s streets in search of a local artist to execute the 3D chalk marvel. Born in Mitchell’s Plain, Mak1One discovered his gift in the expressive medium of graffiti art in the late ’80s.

“It empowered me to express who I was and what I was thinking. The beauty of the art form is that it cuts across all boundaries – be they racial, financial, language or educational,” said Mak1One.

“I am truly honoured to be a part of the campaign, helping bring such a loved icon to life through my medium and expression.”

Mak1One has created unbelievable graffiti and chalk artworks at various national and international events over the years; including Ted Ex Cape Town 2012, the 2012 City of Gold Urban Art Festival Johannesburg, Troup St Mural Project New York (2011), Calligraphy Society Belgium (2007) and in 2002 Chromopolis (in preparation for 2004 Olympics Greece) to name only a few.
