Martial artists graded to black belts

GLENHAZEL - The Blackbelt family centre in Glenhazel is celebrating the grading of 4 of its taekwondo students to black belt.

THE black belt family centre in Glenhazel is celebrating the grading of four of its taekwondo students to black belt.

Darren Gomer, Gabriel Diamond and Gavin Rayd received their 1st degree black belts, while Chad Rayd received his 2nd degree. Andre van Tonder, an instructor at the centre was proud of the accomplishments achieved by the students, “It’s a lot of tough work to obtain a black belt, it takes a lot of perseverance and I’m proud of the guys,” he said.

The centre also just celebrated a grand opening of their new premises in Glenhazel where they have classes for the young and old, focusing on individual needs.

About 14 members of the centre will be taking part at the national taekwondo championships in Pretoria later this month. Van Tonder said preparations were well underway. He said, “They will do well and their hard work should pay off at the nationals, at this stage we are looking pretty good.”

Taekwondo, an official Olympic event, is a martial art of Korean origin that resembles the Japanese martial art of karate. In Korean, “Tae” means kick, “Kwon” means punch, and “Do” means art or way.
