Puntans Hill Cricket Club thrashes Sandton Tigers in dominant season opener

Puntans Hill Cricket Club kicked off their season in style, delivering a commanding performance.

The CGL Club Season 2024/2025 got off to a thrilling start as Puntans Hill Cricket Club faced off against Sandton Tigers Cricket Club on September 28. Despite losing the toss and being sent in to bowl first, Puntans Hill turned what could have been a disadvantage into an overwhelming victory.

Sandton Tigers, having elected to bat, could only muster a meagre 36 runs in 13.5 overs. Puntans Hill’s bowlers delivered a masterclass, with Siyabonga Peter leading the charge. His spectacular spell, which saw him take five wickets for just five runs, included a jaw-dropping hat-trick. This performance marked Siyabonga’s second career hat-trick and his third five-wicket haul for Puntans Hill, solidifying his status as a key player for the club.

Puntans Hill’s dominance didn’t end there. Duncan Lavery brought further firepower to the team, contributing 28 quick runs off just 17 balls. His innings, peppered with four boundaries and a towering six struck into the wind, showcased raw power. Lavery also shone with the ball, claiming two wickets for seven runs in just under three overs, sealing Sandton’s collapse.

Captain Pooveshan Naidoo attributed the win to the team’s relentless effort on the field, praising their cohesion and determination. “This match underscores our commitment to excellence and our ability to perform under pressure. We’re incredibly proud of the team’s performance and look forward to building on this momentum,” he said, confidently reiterating their motto: ‘Front foot always’.

In the end, Puntans Hill chased down the target with ease, finishing at 39/2 and securing an eight wicket victory. It was a stunning start to the season, with the club sending a strong message to the competition – this is a team ready for glory.
