Johannesburg Water to commence with rehabilitation processes at Weinberg Family Park

Savoy and Waverly residents cannot adopt Weinberg Family Park before the rehabilitation process.

The Weinberg Family Park is undergoing a three-week rehabilitation and is a step away from being adopted by Savoy Estate Residents Association and Waverley Ratepayers Residents Homeowners Association.

This was two weeks after the deteriorating park and its unfinished projects were featured on the front page of the Gazette.

The main problem in the park was that there was a dug-up sewer pipe which posed a threat to community members who utilised the facility.

Johannesburg Water marketing and communication officer, Nolwazi Dhlamini confirmed to the Gazette on April 21 that the rehabilitation process was due to start on April 24.
Dhlamini said the project was put on hold after City Parks failed to renew the wayleaves required for contract workers to execute the work in the park. This was also after environmental concerns regarding the wetland were identified.

Ward 74 councillor Belinda Echeozonjoku remained unimpressed with Johannesburg Water’s turnaround time in rehabilitating the park.

“The latest feedback I received when enquiring after the community meeting was that the date for commencement of the rehabilitation by Joburg Water had been shifted to April 14 instead of the initial date of March 30. This will delay the adoption process, resulting in the park further decaying and not being in a position to be used by residents living here.”
